Over the summer, a student at potomac reached out to Whitney Bowen and Hollis Cutler about starting a club focused on confronting the problem of the gender gap in STEM. We began thinking of how our club could approach this issue in an engaging manner, and decided to focus on the younger female generation at Potomac to help them rediscover the importance of their involvement in STEM. At the Potomac School club fair, which is hosted every year, we advocated for our club and ultimately gained 53 signatures of interest. A group of highschoolers meet every week for an hour, where we come together to discuss issues of gender discrimination within companies and classrooms. We hope they will learn to follow their passions no matter what anyone says about them! We want to give younger girls the opportunity and encouragement to pursue their interest in STEM, because we know that gender stereotypes can discourage them.
We have a club which meets bimonthly in the Middle School, where we hold fun science experiments with 4th - 6th grade girls. The club has been a huge hit so far! See photos in the gallery below:
